Angela Merkel | U-LEAD
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was hosted in the House of Decentralisation within her visit to Ukraine.
The Chancellor learned about U-LEAD’s support to the decentralisation and regional policy reforms in Ukraine. She also was informed about the Programme’s operations at the local and regional level in all 24 oblasts of Ukraine where U-LEAD has established and maintains Local Government Development Centres.
“U-LEAD with Europe is an important programme that gives responsibility back to the people. This is a marathon which will take more than a decade in order to be a success,” noted Chancellor Merkel.
Together with Hennadii Zubko, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Georg Milbradt, Special Envoy of the German Government for the Ukrainian reform in the areas of governance and decentralisation, and Dr Annika Weidemann, Acting Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, U-LEAD’s management briefed Chancellor Merkel on the progress of decentralisation, regional development, sector reforms in education and healthcare, as well as amalgamation of municipalities in Ukraine.
“It is a great honour for us to welcome the Chancellor at the House of Decentralisation and inform her about the tangible results of the support provided to Ukraine by the European Union, Germany and four other EU Member States, as well as about our future plans,” said Bastian Veigel, GIZ Programme Director of U-LEAD with Europe.
